IUD
An IUD is a plastic t-shaped device with a hormone called levonorgestel contained within it. It is placed inside the uterus through a medical procedure and is a very effective method of contraception. Our doctors have undertaken training to place and remove the devices.
Advantages
- It is 99.9% effective
- It protects against pregnancy for up to 5 years
- It usually makes bleeding lighter or nil
- It can reduce period pain.
Disadvantages
- It doesn’t protect against sexually transmitted infections
- A small medical procedure is required which may cause pain or discomfort
- There is a small chance of damaging the wall of the uterus, coming out by itself or infection
- Hormonal side effects like headaches, bloating, mood changes may occur.
Implanon
Implanon (otherwise known as “the implant” or “the rod”) is a small plastic rod containing a progestogen hormone. Implanon is inserted under the skin on the inside of the upper arm by a trained Better Health Greenhills Doctor or Nurse and slowly over time releases the hormone into the bloodstream. This is an effective method of contraception.
Advantages
- Over 99% effective at preventing pregnancy for three years
- Is a cost effective contraception
- It isn’t usually noticeable to anyone looking at your arm
- Can be easily removed.
Disadvantages
- Does not protect against sexually transmitted infections
- May sting when inserted
- May cause minor side effects and affect the menstrual cycle.
